FOX LEGENDS AND MYTHS

Foxes have been portrayed in a variety of ways throughout the world. Every culture has a version of the fox, be they legends, myths, or fairytales. Foxes are most often portrayed as cunning and sly, but other cultures show the fox as a creature of magic.

In Japanese mythology, the fox has a couple of different names. Kitsune: A fox with magical powers, most commonly the power of shape shifting and power over the spirits. ("Kitsune" is also the word for fox in Japanese) and Kyuubi: A nine-tailed fox. Shape shifting is not only a part of Japanese mythology, but other cultures as well.

Foxes have had such an influence that there are words that come from the fox and/or its nature. Out-fox, Foxy, and Vixen are just a few of them.
