Classic 80s Cartoon

The original animated series was the first introduction to the turtles for many fans. It was released in 1987 by Fred Wolf Films and was only produced to sell a toy line (which is why the toys turtles didn't look like their cartoon counterparts). Because of the series now being targeted towards kids, they were forced to dumb down and rewrite the turtle's story, as well as the personalities of some characters, to remove the violence and dark tone. This was something the fans of the comic and it's the creators were not happy about.

The 80s series was largely about the turtles fighting the Shredder and his Foot Soldiers. Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang were villans created just for the cartoon. The series was extremely popular in the United States and would eventually become popular around the world. It ran until 1996 before ending.
